This week marks the opening of an incredibly colorful and vibrant show entitled, "Dance in Chaos", featuring the brand new works of Eric Benjamin and Kiah Bellows. Benjamin is new to the A&L family and we couldn't be more excited to welcome him through a joint exhibition with the one and only Kiah Bellows. Read a bit more from the artists on their inspiration for the show below:

Landscapes that inspire, colors that spark something inside of you bringing you back to a comfortable place. Feeling your feet firmly planted on the ground. Something ignites inside, a rush of adrenaline, a little chaos, yet feeling confident and calm. Bringing you back to childlike dreams, sometimes intense with vibrant and captivating color.

Bellows and Benjamin are inspired by and find common ground with Wolf Kahn, Richard Diebenkorn, and Brian Rutenberg. Acrylic and Oil Paintings with Intense color, are what the two do best. These Abstract paintings suggest landscapes through an array of horizontal lines and sometimes precise points of interest. We hope they will draw you in and spark something inside leaving you excited and full of wonder.

The Women of A&L Studios - Part II: Kiah Bellows

As we mentioned last week, Art & Light Gallery is lucky to play host to three beautiful artist studios and the women that occupy them are just as beautiful. Gallery owner and artist, Teresa Roche, local talent, Kiah Bellows and the newest addition, Dorothy Shain. This week, we take a look at Kiah Bellows and what she has going on.

Bellows has been an Art & Light staple for years, balancing her painting with assisting Teresa in running the studio spaces and the gallery. At the start of 2018 she made the choice to focus on her work full-time and move her studio out of the main gallery and into the A&L Studio Cottage in the rear of the property. If you haven't yet visited her new studio, make sure to come on out and say hello during MAC Open studios November 9th - 11th.

The very wise decision to paint full-time and move to the cottage has given her more space to work and more time to propel her career forward. In the past eight months, Bellows has had two pop-up releases through us, prepared for a two exhibitions and gained a new gallery.

Next Friday, you can see Bellow's latest works paired with one of our newest A&L artists, Eric Benjamin. "Dance in Chaos" is sure to be an incredible show and will run from Friday September 7th - September 29th. We hope to see you at the opening celebration on the 7th from 6pm - 8pm.

If you are in Charleston, you can catch Kiah's work with our friends over at Miller Gallery and this November they will host a show with works by both Bellows and Teresa Roche.

We are so excited to see this local Greenville talent continue to grow and thrive doing what she loves! If you would like to keep up with Kiah's latest paintings, please head to our contact page and shoot us a message letting us know. We will add you to her "First Look" email list.

Shain is a young talent with a fresh approach to the business of being an artist. Partnering with other creatives and charitable organizations to give back is a big part of who she is. Celebrating 12 Years with You!

anni card front.jpg

This year marks the 12th anniversary of Art & Light and this milestone has put us in the mood to celebrate everything and everyone that brought us here. Owner, Teresa Roche, started the gallery for one reason - for more people to make art and more people to buy art. Thanks to a very special community of artists and customers, the gallery has grown and continues to! To every single person, artist, customer and friend who has walked through our doors - THANK YOU!

Art & Light now has over 19 resident artists and their work allows us to curate an interesting and approachable gallery space with pieces for both the new and seasoned collector alike.  Connecting artists with collectors (and future collectors!) has always been a passion of Roche and by bringing on board new Gallery Manager, Bracken Sansbury,  and Gallery Associate, Kayla Twomey, both with the same vision, allows us to connect on even more levels.

In order to celebrate our artists and collectors, we want to invite you to a very special Art Party this coming Thursday evening, August 16th, from 6pm - 8pm. We will have an exhibition of all-new work by each of our artists as well as an incredible collection of architectural drawings by Jacob Brillhart. Please click here to learn a bit more about Brillhart and see a few images.

Thank you so much for your support and we look forward to all of the big things our small group of artists and collectors will do!

We are honored to host guest artist, Jacob Brillhart, whose wife is a Greenville native, to Art & Light for a special showcase during our 12th anniversary celebration! Please join us Thursday, August 16th from 6pm - 8pm to see the work in person. Read on to learn more about Brillhart and his process.

Jacob Brillhart has built his career as an architect, painter and professor of architecture.  In 2002, he began an on-going journey of travel drawing –- taking a series of drawing tours through Europe using Le Corbusier’s (Swiss-French architect, 1887 –1965) early sketchbooks as his sole travel guides. On his first trip, he followed Le Corbusier’s itinerary back in 1907 as he traveled through Italy at the age of 19. Since that time, Brillhart has filled over 30 sketchbooks and made more than 600 paintings, sketches and notes of architectural details, maps, people, buildings, objects, interiors, and urban spaces in cities around the world, including many of the same places Le Corbusier stood almost 100 years earlier.  This drawing research has also taught him “to see” the persistencies in architecture, such as color, light, materiality, context, form, mass, profile, shadow, scale, proportion and all the other elements that make architecture matter and affect the human condition.

In recent years, Brillhart has focused on studio work, producing a series of longer paintings of Italy and Miami, and is currently working on series of the American South and the Bahamas. Work has been exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA); Miami-Dade County libraries; and the University of Miami.

Brillhart is also the founder of the Miami-based design firm, Brillhart Architecture. The firm has won numerous design awards and has been featured in The New York Times, Modern Magazine, Architectural Digest, Dwell, The Wall Street Journal, Casa Vogue, and Wallpaper, among other publications.

Brillhart complements his practice as an Associate Professor at the University of Miami School of Architecture, where he teaches design and drawing. In 2016, he published Voyage Le Corbusier: Drawing on the Road, a compendium of 175 travel drawings and watercolors done by Le Corbusier between 1907-1911 (published by W.W. Norton & Co, with foreword by Jean-Louis Cohen).

Jacob earned his BA in Architecture at Tulane University and his Masters of Architecture from Columbia University.

Individual and Earth - The Latest from Jessica Fields

"I’ve been thinking a lot about placing the figure in my landscapes. How we relate to the land. How we are a part of it. It’s an old theme. But my brain is slow and my hand slower. So for now they are just dancing around each other. Portrait and Landscape. Individual and Earth. They are having conversations. Looking at a shared memory album. Not in the same place yet. But it's been a good place to pause and take a look around."

2,700 BC, the Empress Leizu was having tea under a mulberry tree in the imperial gardens when a cocoon fell into her cup and unraveled, revealing one of natures most miraculous gifts- silk.
A long kept beauty secret of goddesses, empresses and queens, sleeping on silk helps preserve youthful skin and luxurious hair.

If you are interested in learning Few's process and would like a hands on experience, you can sign up for her class this coming Friday with the GCCA by clicking here and scrolling down until you see the headline Natural Dying and Floral Imprint on Fabric. It is sure to be an incredible event.

Surface Exchange - Liz Rundorff Smith and Patricia Kilburg

Two completely different and separate voices creating work, side by side.

Rundorff Smith and Kilburg spent several months working together to create a body of work that reflects different approaches to encaustic and demonstrates the varying results that are possible with a contemporary approach to the medium.

The encaustic medium is steeped in art historical significance – it is the same medium used by ancient Egyptians to make mummy portraits 2000 years ago.  A fresh approach to the medium lends contemporaneity to an art form with deep ties to tradition.  Rundorff Smith is creating minimalist graphic paintings incorporating pastels and graphite while Kilburg is working directly with the paint on a hot metal plate to create encaustic monotypes.  The exchange of ideas and processes produced a new body of work that is cohesive in terms of surface and technique but still addresses the distinctive concerns of both artists. Take a look below to see the artists in action.

A satisfying video showing the final tape-pulling on one of Liz Rundorff Smith's encaustic works.

We at Art & Light are thrilled to share this unique and special body of work with you from July 20th to August 11th. We would also love to celebrate alongside the artists with you on the evening of Friday, July 20th from 6pm - 8pm.
